June 19, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS)Inter Miami CF News Release

Inter Miami CF fell to 10 men and lost 2-0 to Atlanta United on the road on Sunday afternoon.

Lineup Notes

Inter Miami returned from the international break with a starting XI featuring Drake Callender in goal; captain Deandre Yedlin, Damion Lowe, Aimé Mabika and Chris McVey in defense; Jean Mota, Robert Taylor and Bryce Duke in midfield; and Indiana Vassilev and Ariel Lassiter on the wings and Leonardo Campana in attack.

Lowe, Yedlin, Taylor and Campana all slotted directly into the starting XI for the visit to Atlanta United after representing the club abroad with their national teams in the international window.

Match Action

The hosts got off to a quick start at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, opening the scoring in the fourth minute; Josef Martínez cut in from the left and played a ball to Luiz Araújo, who curled a strike inside the post for the 1-0 lead from long distance.

Inter Miami responded with a number of threatening counter attacks, with Duke constantly freeing Lassiter and Vassilev down the wings. Two first-half yellow cards for Mota, however, resulted in a man disadvantage for the remainder of proceedings.

Despite the disadvantage, the team continued to search for a goal in attack, but it was Atlanta that scored next; Callender made a save on an initial shot, but the rebound fell to Araújo, who cut a pass back to Martínez and the Venezuelan forward struck to double the lead.

Atlanta held the lead through the final whistle, resulting in a split of the regular season series between the teams.

Post-Match Reaction

“We’ve got nineteen games left, 57 points to play for,” said head coach Phil Neville. “We’ve got to make sure this week we get back to working hard, get back to the qualities that we have, and we’re prepared for Minnesota.”
