Romano dismisses rumours that Arsenal target will sign contract extension with current club

Arsenal target Youri Tielemans during a press conference

Youri Tielemans is not considering signing a new Leicester City contract amid interest from Arsenal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is believed to be a huge fan of Tielemans and is looking to bring him to the Emirates this summer.

The midfielder is available for a cut-price with his contract expiring next year. It is believed that Leicester are asking for £25m.

Arsenal’s signing of Fabio Vieira from Porto has cast some doubt over their pursuit of Tielemans.

The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano have claimed they will still pursue a move for the Belgium playmaker despite the addition of Vieira.

However, on Friday evening Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett reported that Arsenal have ‘cooled’ their interest in Tielemans and are only looking to sign one central midfielder.

Dorsett added that a one-year contract extension is now ‘more likely’ than a transfer to north London, with the player’s relationship with Leicester still ‘very cordial’.

Romano has responded to this claim, telling his Twitter followers shortly after Dorsett’s tweet that Tielemans is ‘not considering’ a Foxes contract extension.

The Italian journalist said: “Been told Youri Tielemans is not considering to sign a contract extension with Leicester now – could be an option in September in case he doesn’t leave, but not now.

“Arsenal are working on it since long time… but no official bid yet. Other clubs are also interested.”

Meanwhile, former Tottenham striker and Arsenal fan Darren Bent is hopeful the Gunners will still complete the signing of Tielemans.

Bent told talkSPORT: “No, I am hoping there is still an opportunity for Tielemans to come in as well. He’s a good player. A really good player. You can’t just have one player for every position.

“Arsenal are in Europe again, so I am sure there is more money to spend. Partey doesn’t stay fit, so we need as many good players as we can.”
