RGV FC Hosts Pittsburgh Riverhounds for First-Ever Meeting

EDINBURG, Texas -Rio Grande Valley FC (6-8-1) is back home at H-E-B Park and is set to face Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (7-4-3). The first-ever clash between the sides will take place on Saturday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m. CST. The action will be live nationally on ESPN+ and locally on Somos El Valle 5.2.

Rio Grande Valley plays host to an Eastern conference side, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, who is coming off a 3-0 loss to the Charleston Battery on June 11, they have gone 1-2-2 in their last five matches and look to redeem themselves on Saturday, June 18th in Texas.

The Toros allowed a comfortable 2-0 halftime lead to slip away in the later stages of a June 11 match on the road against Oakland Roots SC. At the final whistle, RGV found themselves with their first draw of the season as Oakland climbed back and stole a point from the matchup to end the night with a 2-2 score.

A new face emerged at goalkeeper as Javier Garcia took the reins in the absence of Tyler Deric and Colin Miller who are both nursing injuries. Garcia is a local to the Rio Grande Valley who hails out of Mission, TX and played high school ball at La Joya Juarez- Lincoln. The 6’2 keeper made three saves in the match, including a save of the week candidate save which came at the late stages of the match as a bouncing ball made its way into the box and Oakland attempted a bounce shot past him but he denied the shot and cleared the danger to keep the match even at 2-2.

Wilmer Cabrera looks to mix it up once again in this matchup as he sees the return of Jose ‘Gringo’ Torres to the lineup after serving a one match suspension due to his red card on June 4th against LA Galaxy ll. He has seen great support from his back line, especially on the offensive end as Robert Coronado turned into an attacking midfielder and has accumulated four goals in the season to earn him a notable look for being a danger piece up front. Wahab Ackwei has been solid at defense and even more productive up front as he has tallied two goals in the season, both on set piece plays.
