Arsenal ‘waste time’ as they fail with ‘starting’ £51m ‘assault’ on Serie A striker

Arsenal-linked Osimhen

According to reports, Arsenal have approached Serie A side Napoli with an opening bid of around £51m for their striker Victor Osimhen.

Following a successful season in Ligue 1 with Lille, Osimhen joined Napoli in 2020. They paid a club-record fee to bring him in for £60m plus add-ons.

The forward has netted 28 goals in 62 appearances for the Serie A side over the past two seasons.

Osimhen missed 13 games through injury last term but he still found the net 18 times in 32 appearances across all competitions.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months. Arsenal are understood to be among the clubs interested in him.

Il Mattino are reporting that Arsenal ‘have tried to have an appointment’ with Napoli as they have come with a ‘starting base’ of £51m.

There is expected to be an ‘assault’ on Osimhen this summer with several clubs interested from the Premier League and La Liga.

It is said that Napoli have been ‘clear to everyone’ that teams should not ‘waste time’. They ‘won’t even sit down to talk’ until a bid of £85m comes in.

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has “very mixed” feelings on the club’s pursuit of Gabriel Jesus but would be “amazed” if he doesn’t score 20 goals in north London.

“Whether Gabriel Jesus is the kind of player Arsenal need right now is entirely down to the individual opinion.

“Arsenal really need a finisher, someone who gets into the box. But with the way Mikel Arteta wants to play, I don’t know whether a number nine can be like that. That’s why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was such a good goal scorer. He wasn’t a proper nine, he was a number 11 playing off the flanks with his pace.

“I’m very mixed in the Gabriel Jesus debate. Under Pep Guardiola he wasn’t a favourite and didn’t always play, but if they get him at a decent price, I’d be amazed if he doesn’t score at least 20 goals in the league for Arsenal.

“That’s what Jesus likes to do. He likes to play around the edge of the box, with a lovely burst of pace, and that’s what Arsenal miss. It would be a very good signing if they could nail him down.”
