SEASIDE, California – Monterey Bay F.C. (4-8-0, 12 points) fell 2-0 to Oakland Roots SC at Cardinale Stadium in Week 13 of the USL Championship Regular Season. Missing six goals and three assists offensively with Chase Boone, Christian Volesky and Sam Gleadle unavailable in the match, the Union attack found it difficult to break down the Roots defense and ended the night scoreless.

Oakland Roots SC scored the opening goal of the match in the 21st minute, courtesy of Edgardo Rito. Two minutes later, Monterey Bay F.C. earned a corner, but the header from Chris Cortez missed over the top of the crossbar. In the 39th minute of the match, Oakland started a build up down the right sideline that resulted in a low cross through to the far side of the box, but the Roots forward stumbled over the ball and the visitor’s chance went array.

Oakland’s Mikael Johnsen had a chance to score two minutes into the second half, but Dallas Jaye clawed the ball out of the bottom-right corner to keep the Union in the match. In the 51st minute, the Crisp and Kelp created a run down the right sideline. The ensuing cross from Morey Doner was headed by Walmer Martinez back beyond the top of the box. James Murphy gathered the ball and fired a knuckleball on frame, but the goalkeeper kept the ball out to keep the Union off the board. Late in the match in the 83rd minute, Adrian Rebollar fired a cross into the box that settled at the feet of second-half substitute Seku Conneh. Conneh then laid the ball off to Murphy for a shot, but the shot was blocked. The ball then landed at the feet of Robbie Crawford, but his shot missed wide of the left post. Another incredible save by Jaye kept Ottar Karlsson from sneaking the ball into the bottom-left corner in the 90th minute, but Oakland continued to apply counter pressure.
