Pundit urges Ten Hag to replace Maguire as Manchester United captain with de Gea

Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and David de Gea

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag should replace Harry Maguire as captain with goalkeeper David de Gea this summer.

There are questions marks over whether Maguire will even be first choice in at Old Trafford next season after a disappointing campaign.

The 12 players Manchester United can offload this summer to apparently save £500m

United could only manage a sixth placed finish in the Premier League last season and with new manager Ten Hag set to officially take the job at the end of this month, he has plenty of work to do.

One of the first major decisions he will have to make is what he does with the captaincy. Maguire is the current skipper but there are major doubts over whether he is the right man for job.

Goalkeeper de Gea is one candidate as is talismanic striker Cristiano Ronaldo but Darren Bent has claimed there is only one man for the job.

Bent, who played for the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and Sunderland, believes Ronaldo’s behaviour on the field last season rules him out.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent said: “I think that David De Gea should be the captain.

“My only thing with Ronaldo is, we know he’s a leader, but he tried to lead this season and not many of the players followed him. Some of them went the other way.

“None of them improved, none of them wanted to follow the example that he set and we know that he’s one of the greats, but there were times when people didn’t pass the ball to him and he’d turn his back on them and throw his arms up in the air.

“That’s not a captain.

“He was a captain this season without having the armband, but for me David De Gea would be my captain.”

Asked if that means he’d strip Maguire of the captaincy, Bent said: “It would be deserved because there’s an argument that Harry Maguire might not even start next season.

“If Ten Hag brings in another centre half he might want to partner him with [Raphael] Varane, there’s no guarantee that he starts.”
