Mbappe makes ‘sporting project’ claim in response to ‘scandalous’ £1m per week PSG contract

Kylian Mbappe has insisted that the “sporting project” at PSG is more important than the money he will earn.

The Frenchman was fully expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. His previous contract at PSG was due to expire in June.

The Spanish giants attempted to sign him last summer and in January but they were primed to snap him up during the upcoming transfer window.

Real Madrid have been left frustrated though as Mbappe has committed his future to PSG.

Sky Sports have revealed that his new three-year deal includes a £100m signing on bonus and he will earn £1m a week.

La Liga have claimed it is ‘scandalous’ that PSG can offer such a deal and they are planning to complain to UEFA.

When asked about this extension, Mbappe claimed that he and PSG only talked about money “for a few minutes”:

“Everybody knows I wanted to leave last year. But things are different now, in sporting terms and personally,” Mbappe said (quotes via ESPN).

“Leaving my country wasn’t the right thing. There’s a sentimental aspect to this, and the sporting project has changed as well… We spoke for months about the sporting project, and we spoke about money for just a few minutes.

It has also been suggested that this new deal provides Mbappe with a say in transfers and managerial appointments at PSG.

He played down these claims: “I’m not going to go beyond my role as a player. You don’t need special responsibility to be involved in this project.

“There’s a captain at this club, Marquinhos, and I’m not looking to take over from him. I don’t need to be captain to give my point of view.”

Speaking on Real Madrid, Mbappe insisted that he has “a lot of respect” for the Spanish giants:

“I made my decision last week,” Mbappe added. “I spoke to Florentino Perez, I have a lot of respect for him and for Real Madrid.
