Viewing Party on Friday - OurSports Central

May 22, 2022 – Canadian Premier League (CPL) – Atletico Ottawa News Release

Atlético Ottawa continued with their away travels as they ventured outside of Ontario for the first time this season, taking on FC Edmonton on Sunday afternoon. Billed as an energetic affair by coaches from the get-go, fans were treated to unrelenting action from one end of the pitch to the other, Atlético Ottawa coming out on top with a 2-1 win and adding three more points to its CPL record.

KEY MOMENTS

Atlético Ottawa’s leading goalscorer Brian Wright added to his tally, giving his side a first-half lead (40′).

Wright, who has scored 3 goals on the season, sits tied in second in the chase for the golden boot, two behind the league leader Alejandro Díaz of Pacific FC (Ottawa’s opponent on June 5th at TD Place).

Wright could’ve just as easily ended the day on top of the rankings, after seeing at least two other stellar chances barely stopped by the Eddies’ GK Vaikla. He closed out the night with 3 shots on target, 4 coming from inside the box.

Ollie Basset, who converted a kick from the mark in the 70′, follows with 2 goals so far on the season.

Malcolm Shaw (last season’s leading scorer for ATO) and Ballou Tabla also have one goal to their name so far this year.

Midway through a first longish streak on the road for Atlético Ottawa, Head Coach Carlos Gonzalez opted to make a few strategic rotations to his starting lineup: the most notable was a second start for CPL-U SPORTS first overall pick José Cunha, who came into the midfield next to Ollie Basset and Ben McKendry.

With a league seeing more and more parity across teams, the three points collected on Sunday were a key defining factor for the Atléti, seeing them jump from the 7th spot to tied in second with Cavalry (11 pts) going into Week 8.

Atlético Ottawa have one more road match to complete, this time in Winnipeg against Valour FC (Wednesday, June 1st, KO 8PM ET, live on OneSoccer), before returning home to TD Place on Sunday,…
