Newcastle United ‘have stepped up their interest in Manchester United and England goalkeeper Dean Henderson’ ahead of the summer window.

Eddie Howe wanted to sign Henderson, 25, on loan in January and could now sanction a move for the £20million-valued stopper, who is viewed as the ideal successor to Martin Dubravka.

Henderson had ambitions to become the Old Trafford No 1 but the excellent from of David de Gea this season has severely restricted his game time.

The England international has played in just three first-team matches and it is uncertain incoming manager Erik ten Hag would play him ahead of De Gea.

The Daily Mirror report that Newcastle could offer Henderson with an escape route to more regular football which would, in turn, boost his chances of making the England squad for the Qatar World Cup this winter.

Enriched by their Saudi Arabian backers, Newcastle are expected to spend a fair bit of money this summer to push for European qualification next season, after Howe successfully steered them away from relegation danger.
