Race hots up as West Ham back in for departing Man Utd star

Jesse Lingard, David Moyes, West Ham, February 2021.

West Ham United are reportedly keen to reunite with Jesse Lingard when he leaves Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

The Hammers took the 29-year-old on loan during the second half of the 2020-2021 campaign. He had become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and the move was beneficial to both parties. The forward bagged nine goals and assisted five in 16 Premier League games, proving he was far from a spent force.

The East End outfit made no secret of their desire to take him on a permanent deal. But United refused to play ball as the clubs could not agree on a fee.

The hope was that Lingard would be given more of an opportunity back at the Theatre of Dreams. However, once again he has been on the peripheries this season.

Despite the Red Devils’ struggles, the England ace has been handed just two starts among 16 top-flight appearances, scoring twice. Indeed it seemed as though Newcastle United would end his nightmare during the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe wanted to take him to St James’ Park but once again United’s terms proved unpalatable for the Magpies. Lingard remained with the north-west giants but it is obvious that his days at the club are now numbered.

He will fall out of contract this summer, with no prospect of penning fresh terms. There will be no shortage of suitors when the summer window opens, with Newcastle thought to be still interested.

Barcelona and Juventus have also been linked but the pull to West Ham may be strong.

Lingard still has much to offer

Lingard had become virtually redundant at United before his temporary stint at the London Stadium. The change of scene breathed new life into his stalling career and even saw him back in the England picture.
