Manchester City are said to seriously considering the idea of swapping fan favourite Bernardo Silva for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong this summer.
Pep Guardiola’s mind is already starting to focus on the summer, despite the ongoing Premier League title race, after City dramatically crashed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage to Real Madrid in midweek.
The Spaniard wants to strengthen his squad after admitting concerns over his player’s mentality in that defeat at the Bernabeu.
One of the key areas that need looking at is central midfield. Indeed, the club needs to find a replacement for veteran star Fernadinho, while Ilkay Gundogan could also move on.
And Mundo Deportivo claims a swap deal for major City target De Jong and Silva could actually happen.
The Netherlands midfielder remains a part of Xavi’s plans at the Nou Camp. That is despite the fact he’s not always being at his best this season.
But the report states that getting Silva on board in Catalonia would be too good an offer to pass up.
City, in turn, would receive a player who is three years younger in De Jong. And Guardiola is also a big fan of the player.
Man City to make three signings
The report is also backed up by The Sun, who claims Manchester City will make De Jong, Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez their three top signings this summer.
But De Jong is not the only midfielder on City’s radar. There also remains firm interest in Declan Rice and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Monaco star Tchouameni is something of a gamble, given his young age. However, he would be considerably cheaper than Rice, who West Ham still rate at £150million.
De Jong, though, is considered the better fit for City’s engine room, having scored four goals and added five assists from midfield this season.
Silva exit would be a mistake
A City team without Bernardo Silva makes no sense at all, given how well he’s played this season.
