Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas has nailed his colours to the mast and declared his allegiance for Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
The Reds are set to take on Los Blancos in Paris on May 28 after easing past Villareal 5-2 on aggregate. Although the result looks emphatic, the Anfield giants did not have things all their own way. The LaLiga outfit led 2-0 at the break during this week’s second leg, levelling the tie at 2-2.
However, second-half goals by Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane ensured the Merseysiders quadruple bid is still alive. They will take on Carlo Ancelotti’s men at Stade de France after Real’s amazing victory over Manchester City.
Trailing 5-3 on aggregate, Rodrygo scored twice in the space of a minute right at the death. And Karim Benzema’s extra-time penalty gave the Spanish side passage into the showpiece event.
Real are looking for a double having already secured the league title. But Jurgen Klopp’s side are still alive in three competitions having already bagged the EFL Cup.
The Champions League final will bring down the curtain on 2021-2022 in Europe. It has all the makings of a classic, with both clubs packed full of attacking talent.
Aspas spent one unsuccessful season with Liverpool in 2013-2014. The 34-year-old netted just one goal from 15 outings, starting only five Premier League games.
But he made it clear who he wants to see lift the trophy in the French capital.
“I have a lot of appreciation for Liverpool, but I prefer Real Madrid to win because they give more hype to La Liga,” he told Cadena Ser.
Aspas shows his true colours in Spain
Aspas joined Liverpool from Celta de Vigo in the summer of 2013, with the Reds paying in the region of £9m for the forward. Much was expected of the Spain international but he failed to deliver the goods.
