Hammer blow for Liverpool as Barcelona reach ‘breakthrough’ in contract discussions with Gavi

Barcelona star Gavi

Liverpool have been handed a major setback as Barcelona have reportedly reached a ‘breakthrough’ in their contract discussions with Gavi.

The 17-year-old, who usually operates in central midfield, is one of the latest starlets to come off the Barcelona production line. He is already a first-team regular at the Nou Camp, having played 42 times under Xavi this season.

Gavi has the perfect opportunity to become a top-class midfielder, as his head coach was one of the best in the position for years.

The Spain international, capped six times, has become a transfer target for Liverpool and Manchester United in recent months.

They met with his agent earlier on Friday and an extension is now close to being agreed.

There is still a slight difference in terms of the wage, but this small issue should be ironed out in the coming days and weeks.

Gavi is apparently ‘keen’ to extend his spell with Barca, despite garnering links with Liverpool.

It’s clear to see why he would want to remain in Catalonia. Gavi could form part of the Barca midfield, along with Pedri, for the next 10 years or more.
