Newcastle United leading European giants in race to sign Renan Lodi from Atletico Madrid

Renan Lodi of Atletico Madrid

Newcastle United’s ‘strong’ interest in Atletico Madrid star Renan Lodi is putting Juventus off making a move for him, according to a report.

Lodi began his career at Athletico Paranaense in Brazil before moving to Spain in July 2019. Atletico paid just over £19.5million for his signature, as per transfermarkt.

The left-back made 43 appearances in his debut season, helping Atletico finish third in La Liga and reach the Champions League last eight.

His best achievement with Diego Simeone’s team came last term, when they edged out rivals Real Madrid on the final day to lift the La Liga title.

The 24-year-old, who has won 15 caps for Brazil, remains an important part of Simeone’s plans. He has featured 40 times this campaign, registering four goals and four assists.

But Lodi could end up getting a new challenge over the summer. Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim Newcastle and Juventus both hold hopes of capturing the Atletico man.

Newcastle are likely to make Matt Targett’s loan move from Aston Villa permanent at the end of the season. Despite this, it seems Eddie Howe wants top-class competition for him.

And signing Lodi would be a great solution given his experience at the highest level.

Renan Lodi the ‘first name’ on Newcastle list

The report states Newcastle have a ‘strong’ interest in Lodi, which is making life ‘complicated’ for Juve.

The player is apparently the ‘first name’ on Howe’s list of potential additions to bolster the left side of defence.

Newcastle are ready to pay £21m to sign Lodi. Juve are wary of getting into a bidding war and could end up pulling out of the pursuit altogether.

Previous sources reveal the Magpies have a trump card to play, just in case Juve do come forward with a bid.

Lodi is good friends with Bruno Guimaraes, who has been shining in the Newcastle midfield since his arrival during the winter.

The pair were team-mates at Athletico Paranaense and could feature together at St James’ Park next…
