Mohamed Salah may regret stirring up the Champions League final debate by claiming Liverpool want revenge over Real Madrid, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Salah has etched himself into Reds folklore with his achievements since moving to Anfield this season. He has proved vital in the five major trophies won under manager Jurgen Klopp. What’s more, his goalscoring record of 155 strikes in 248 games speaks for itself.
On a personal level, though, the 2018 Champions League final remains an unhealed wound for Salah.
The Egyptian went to face Madrid as Liverpool’s standout star, having netted 44 goals in all competitions in the 2017/18 season. However, he only lasted 30 minutes in the Kyiv showpiece.
Salah suffered a shoulder injury in a challenge with Sergio Ramos and subsequently left the field in tears. Liverpool eventually lost 3-1, but face Madrid again in this season’s final.
The Reds booked their place in Paris by coming back to beat Villarreal. And after Madrid followed suit with a dramatic recovery against Manchester City in their semi-final, Salah declared that his side “have a score to settle”.
But former Aston Villa star Agbonlahor insisted that Salah may regret the social media post, given the run-ins the clubs have between now and the final.
“I think [Liverpool] will be [delighted]. But I wouldn’t be over delighted,” the pundit told talkSPORT.
“Mo Salah posted on Instagram last night like he’s got a score to settle, he posted that on his Instagram. And I’m thinking sometimes that can come back to bite you.
“Real Madrid are no mugs, last night they showed that they were the better team for most of the game for me. They’ve still got some good players.
“And they can rest all their players now for three weeks, three-and-a-half weeks. The La Liga’s won, so they probably won’t play again now for three weeks.
