Sacramento, Calif. – On Tuesday, the USL Championship announced Republic FC’s Dan Casey was named to the Week 8 Team of the Week Bench for his performance in the club’s 1-1 draw with Las Vegas Lights FC on April 30.
The Irish defender was a threat all evening in set-piece opportunities for the club, coming up from the back to record five shots – the highest mark of any player who appeared in the contest. He completed 93% of his passing attempts, good for second on the squad, and scored Sacramento’s only goal of the night in the 37th minute. After Republic FC fell behind 1-0, Casey found the ball at his feet in the box following a corner kick and punched it through to equalize. The score was his second of the season following his goal in the club’s April 20 U.S. Open Cup match, and just his third in a Republic FC uniform.
Casey’s selection is his first to the USL Championship’s weekly top squad since joining Sacramento at the start of last season. He is the fifth player from Republic FC to earn the honor in 2022, following fellow defenders Ferrety Sousa and Damia Viader, Douglas Martinez Jr., and Rodrigo Lopez.
Republic FC is back in action this Wednesday when the club hosts New Mexico United for the first time since 2019 at Heart Health Park. Kickoff for the contest is set for 7:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 News App, and streaming on ESPN+.
