Andy Robertson hailed three Liverpool teammates after the Reds returned to the top of the table, for a few hours at least, after a hard-fought 1-0 win at Newcastle on Saturday.

Naby Keita’s first-half strike was enough to separate the sides at St James’ Park. However, title rivals Manchester City responded emphatically later in the day as they won 4-0 at relegation-threatened Leeds United to return to the summit.

Jurgen Klopp gambled with his selection for the game on Tyneside. The German made five changes, with the likes of Joe Gomez, Keita and Milner all starting, as Klopp looked to freshen up his side ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Villarreal.

However, Liverpool were still able to pull off the win in their hunt for an historic quadruple.

Speaking after the game, Robertson revealed the Newcastle star who was causing Liverpool problems before they eventually took charge.

He said: “Joelinton was causing us a couple of problems early on. But in the second half I thought the lads were excellent against him.

“They started better than us but then we got a foothold in the game. We got the goal and we got a bit better after that.

“They didn’t have many chances. I thought the two centre-backs and Joe Gomez were different class.

“We made five changes today, but the lads that are coming in are putting in big performances. We need that between now and the end of the season.”

Klopp hails impressive win

Klopp was also full of praise for his side after they secured their 25th league win of a remarkable season.

The Reds chief said: “I thought it was a top-class game in extremely difficult circumstances. Playing this kind of football.

“That’s why I’m really happy. You want to win football games and in the best case you deserve to win and we did today 100% against a team in great form in a great atmosphere.”
