EPL: Man Utd’s Top 4 Hopes Over as Speculation Mounts on Ronaldo Future

EPL: Man Utd's Top 4 Hopes Over as Speculation Mounts on Ronaldo Future

Manchester United’s top four aspirations appear over after only managing a 1-1 home draw with Chelsea on Thursday despite another Cristiano Ronaldo strike.

Chelsea went ahead on the hour from Marcos Alonso’s goal, before Ronaldo equalized two minutes later after Nemanja Matic’s lofted pass.

The result, however, leaves United sixth on 55 points from 35 games, sitting five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal who have played 33 games.

Tottenham are in between the pair as well on 58 points from 33 games, meaning United would need a miracle to leapfrog both.

United boss Ralf Rangnick had already said it wasn’t realistic to be thinking about Champions League and added post-game: “It was a good point for us.

“At least we fought. They are one of the top teams in the league. There is nothing to blame the players for in terms of attitude.”

The hot topic after the game was the futures of Rangnick and 37-year-old Ronaldo, who has been linked with the exit door after Henk ten Hag’s appointment.

Rangnick is expected to be unveiled as Austria’s new national team boss. He said: “I want to speak tonight about Manchester United and our game and the rest of the season here.

“This is the issue and I can also confirm that I will continue at the end of the season in my consultancy role.”

On Ronaldo, Rangnick said: “This is something that we should speak about between Erik and the board and myself. Cristiano has another year of contract. It is also important to find out what he wants, if he wants to stay.”

He added on Sky Sports: “In the end, its both Eriks and also Criss decision what they want to do. It is not for me to speak about that but, today, the performance of Cris was really great.”
