Liverpool told Conor Gallagher is perfect successor for Jordan Henderson

Liverpool have been told to pursue Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher as one pundit believes he would be a perfect successor to Jordan Henderson at Anfield.

Sunderland-born Henderson left the north east in July 2011 when Liverpool paid a reported £20million to sign him. The transfer was initially met with scepticism, but Henderson has proven to be a great player for the Reds.

He has made 440 appearances in all competitions, registering 33 goals and 57 assists. The central midfielder has been at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s team for years – leading them to European and domestic success.

He lifted the Champions League trophy in 2018-19, before winning the club’s first Premier League title the following season.

Henderson, now 31, remains an important part of Klopp’s plans. He has featured 48 times so far this term as Liverpool hunt the quadruple.

But the player’s age is leading to suggestions that a replacement soon needs to be found. And Liverpool have set a high bar for themselves after the success of Luis Diaz’s January transfer.

Liverpool urged to capture Conor Gallagher

Former Southampton and West Brom striker Charlie Austin, who currently plays for QPR, thinks the Merseyside outfit should look within the Premier League for a solution.

During an appearance on talkSPORT, Austin said: “I think any team who are rebuilding would like Conor Gallagher.

“He’s so energetic, you look at him the way he plays, the way he carries himself.

“I think a lot of football fans see him play and think, ‘I’d like him at my football club’. I do believe that.

“I’d say he would be, not a replacement, but Jordan Henderson, I’d put him in there when Jordan moves on, or retires or goes into a different football role, he [Gallagher] would be great.”

As exciting as it would be to see Gallagher work under Klopp at Anfield, a transfer will not be easy to complete.

The 22-year-old is on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea and will likely return to Stamford Bridge…
