Consistent Manchester United man De Gea set for reward as talks planned with Ten Hag in mind

David De Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United, March 2022.

Manchester United are reportedly planning on offering club stalwart David De Gea a new deal after Erik ten Hag takes control at the club.

De Gea has long been one of United’s most important assets. The Spaniard has racked up 483 appearances for the Red Devils in more than 10 years at the club.

Despite a number of disappointing seasons in recent years, De Gea has been one of few shining lights. He has consistently performed despite others sometimes not being up to United’s standards.

The goalkeeper has won United’s player of the year award four times. He has enjoyed a good deal of team success at the club too, having won the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

He will hope that successful period is set to continue under new management.

90min reports that the club stalwart will soon open talks over a new deal with United.

His current deal is up in 2023, and United do have an option to extend that by a year. However, the report suggests they want to tie the 31-year-old down for even longer.

Indeed, with Ten Hag soon to take control as manager, there could be a different look to the side in the near future. However, as one of the club’s most influential assets, United are keen to keep De Gea around.

The goalkeeper is reportedly seen as a ‘stabilising’ player within the squad.

As such, keeping him around to guide younger players and lead the side is obviously a bonus.

De Gea contract could help transition

De Gea being handed a new contract could help United out for a number of reasons. Given the faith shown in him under the new regime, he will likely continue to put in great performances.

That will, of course, be a good thing for United on the pitch.

And should a senior player fully back the new management, the rest of the squad could well follow suit.

Indeed, keeping De Gea happy, in his senior role in the side, will go a long way in helping the rest of the squad to buy into Ten Hag’s project at the club.
