Chelsea boss Tuchel is interested in signing Tottenham-linked Gvardiol to replace Rudiger

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel is reportedly a “big fan” of RB Leipzig centre-half Josko Gvardiol.

The Croatian international was close to joining Leeds United in 2020 before opting to sign for Leipzig last summer.

He has been excellent for the Bundesliga side this campaign, making 42 appearances across all competitions with his side currently preparing for a Europa League semi-final against Rangers.

Gvardiol recently emerged as a target for Tottenham, with the Daily Mail claiming the north Londoners are ‘interested in making a summer move’.

The 20-year-old is under contract at the Red Bull Arena until 2026 and is valued at £27m, as per Transfermarkt.

Sky Germany have thrown Chelsea’s name in the mix to sign Gvardiol. They claim that Tuchel is a “big fan” of the player and will “definitely” take the former Dinamo Zagreb star if he can get him.

He is being eyed as a replacement for Antonio Rudiger, who is poised to join Real Madrid this summer when his contract expires.

It is believed that Leipzig would be willing to negotiate with Chelsea, however, they are unable to negotiate transfers due to the sanctions placed on the club.

Speaking after the Blues’ Premier League win over West Ham on Sunday, Tuchel said that he was hoping to keep hold of Rudiger, confirming that the German will not renew his current deal.

“Toni, the situation is that he wants to leave the club. He informed me of this in a private talk,” said Tuchel.

“We gave everything – me and the club – but we could not fight anymore because of the actions. Without the sanctions we would at least be able to carry on fighting, but our hands are tied. We don’t take it personally. It is his decision.
