Gerrard to ramp up Aston Villa transfer attempts for Duje Caleta-Car following Ligue 1 scouting trip

Aston Villa are reportedly keen on Marseille centre-back Duje Caleta-Car, following a scouting trip to watch the Ligue 1 side recently.

It seems Steven Gerrard is keen on making major improvements to the Aston Villa side in the summer. He started to shape the squad to his liking in January, with Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Calum Chambers the big additions.

With Villa currently sitting in 15th, Gerrard will be eyeing some more quality for next term. Indeed, reports that a lot of players will be allowed to leave will open the door for new additions.

And the manager appears to be taking steps towards some summer deals already. He, along with Villa sporting director Johan Lange and CEO Christian Purslow, watched Marseille take on Nantes recently.

Thanks to Villa’s previous interest in Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara, it seems he was the focus of the trip. However, Football Insider has issued an update that shows Villa to be keen on another Marseille man.

The report states that centre-back Caleta-Car is on the radar of the recruitment team. The centre of the defence is a position that Gerrard apparently wants to improve.

The manager has not been fully convinced by regular duo Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa in his time at Villa Park.

Indeed, that partnership could be split up, should another centre-back enter the fold.

Caleta-Car could well be the man to do that.

Gerrard is reportedly keen on adding a dominant centre-back into the mix, and at nearly 6ft3in, the Marseille man seems to be just that.

The potential snare of Caleta-Car shows ambition from Gerrard. It is clear that he wants to add quality, and see the side climb the table.

The centre-back has experience in playing European football, something Villa will be hoping for in the coming seasons. Caleta-Car has played in each of the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Conference League.
