‘I’m not thick’ – Newcastle star Jonjo Shelvey tackles exit claims, says club is only going ‘one way’

Jonjo Shelvey has acknowledged that he could well become surplus to requirements as the Newcastle takeover begins to really bear fruit.

The 30-year-old celebrated the six-year anniversary of his signing for the Magpies in January. In that time, he has featured in both the Premier League and the Championship for the Tyneside club.

Indeed, he has experienced the highs and lows of Newcastle in his time in the North East. And the future looks bright for the Magpies following their Saudi-led takeover in October.

Arrivals of the likes of 24-year-old Bruno Guimaraes in January are a sign of where the club want to go.

Reports in February claimed that Newcastle want to offer former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey a new contract.

While Shelvey has insisted that he wants a new deal, he has admitted that he could get left behind.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Englishman said: “I’m not thick. I know this club is going to evolve and go only one way.

“But while I’m here, I just need to keep progressing, get the manager to get the best out of me & me repay that with performances.

“Hopefully I can be here for a good few years. I want to show the club that I warrant a couple more years.

“I’d happily hold my hands up and say I don’t deserve to be here if I felt I can’t play at this top level any more, but I want to stay as long as I can and be part of it all.”

Shelvey’s current contract runs out at the end of next season.

While he may not earn new terms, he will watch on with expectations of Newcastle becoming as big as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Shelvey expecting big Newcastle rise

“I feel in time the club will be like massive, massive club, you know we are talking like the Man Citys and Paris Saint-Germains,” he said.

“I think they are going to get to that stage but obviously that takes time and is a building process but the owners here are doing the right things.

“It is step-by-step but you have to be patient.”
