‘I say it every week’; Howe reflects on ‘hard’ Newcastle journey after Palace scalp

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe felt the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace was one of his side’s best displays and proves how far they have come.

The Magpies made it three successive top-flight wins as Miguel Almiron scored the only goal of the game on 32 minutes. They have now moved on to 40 points and sit 11th in the Premier League table. Having beaten Wolves and Leicester, the Tynesiders needed to be at their best to get past a talented Palace side.

And Howe was delighted with the way they raised their game – especially during the opening 45 minutes.

“It was a very good first half. With the ball and in terms of our intensity, it was up there with one of our best performances,” he told Sky Sports. “In the second half Crystal Palace came back into it, but we defended very well.

“We’ve had a very good shape. The players have developed a good mentality to defending, and I think we needed to because Palace played well.”

And the former Bournemouth chief reflected on the journey his charges have taken since the turn of the year.

“It’s a great night for the football club. You can forget how hard it’s been to get us into this position now. We have to look back with great satisfaction,” he added.

“I say it every week but his is a great place to play football. The all-round atmosphere was brilliant to experience.”

Howe hails Newcastle development

Howe’s arrival did not herald immediate results for Newcastle. But the January transfer window helped, with several shrewd acquisitions.

However, it has not just been the winter signings who have contributed, a fact not lost on the manager.

“It seems like a long time ago [since I came in],” he continued. “You can very quickly forget where we were and where we’ve come from this season.

“It’s been great to see the team move forward and develop certain characteristics.”

Almiron bagged his first goal of the season on Wednesday night, with Howe paying him a fitting tribute.
