Timo Werner ends barren 18-month wait as Chelsea destroy Southampton with six-goal thrust

Chelsea responded to two dismal defeats in the best possible fashion with a rampaging 6-0 Premier League win over Southampton at St Mary’s.

Having lost to Brentford 4-1 last weekend and then Real Madrid 3-1 on Wednesday, questions have been raised about Chelsea’s desire in recent games. And while Southampton themselves have been in shocking form – their last Premier League win came on February 25 – it was still a performance to be admired by the Blues.

Sporting their yellow kit, Chelsea made a strong start and showed their intent from pretty much the first whistle. The opening goal duly arrived

And with just nine minutes on the clock. Then move was started by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who played the ball into Mason Mount. The England man then showed great composure to find Marcos Alonso, who finished well.

Thomas Tuchel’s side looked like a team with a point to prove. And the one-way traffic continued as the Blues doubled their lead after 18. The goal was started and finished by Mount, who, after exchanging passes with Loftus-Cheek drilled a fine strike past Fraser Forster.

Chelsea continued to press with Timo Werner looking lively. Indeed, the German was unfortunate not to register in the opening exchanges. However, he was not to be denied and claimed his eighth of the season. And what a goal it was, Werner running through on goal, rounding Forster and firing into the unguarded net.
