Cristiano Ronaldo boost expected but injuries hinder selections

Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United, April 2022.

After a tough run of late, the predicted Manchester United team to face Everton could see Cristiano Ronaldo return to boost his side.

Manchester United have not been in the best of form in recent weeks. Indeed, in their last four games in all competitions, they have only managed to win once.

That win was a 3-2 victory over Tottenham, in which Ronaldo scored a hat-trick. However, United lost the game prior to that 4-1 against Manchester City.

Since the win, they have not fared too well either. Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League thanks to a 2-1 loss on aggregate against Atletico Madrid.

Ralf Rangnick’s side followed that up with a 1-1 draw with Leicester City. In fact, the Red Devils could have lost that game too, were James Maddison’s winner not ruled out for a foul in the build up.

Ronaldo missed that game due to illness, but is expected to return to face Everton. “Cristiano is back again,” Rangnick said in his pre-match press conference.

United are, however, hindered by the loss of some regular starters. Indeed, Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay are all injured, along with Edinson Cavani, according to the manager.

Against Leicester, David De Gea started in net, with Harry Maguire and Varane as the centre-back pairing.

Diogo Dalot started at right-back, with Shaw at left-back; he was replaced at half time.
