Ruben Dias is expected to be absent for Manchester City in what could be a title decider against Liverpool next week – but Pep Guardiola isn’t thinking that far ahead yet.
Guardiola confirmed the news while speaking at a press conference to preview City’s return from the international break against Burnley. That game occupies his full focus for now, but it is easy to look ahead to the repercussions of the Ruben Dias news.
The centre-back last played for City on March 1st, in an FA Cup win over Peterborough. A vital member of their system, they have still managed two 4-1 wins and two goalless draws without him.
But Dias’ absence will extend for another couple of weeks, Guardiola has confirmed. It means he is likely to miss their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid and crucial Premier League match against Liverpool.
Guardiola confirmed: “I don’t know, the doctor said four to six weeks.
“I think it’s four now, (from) March 1, now it’s April 1. I think we need 10 days or two weeks more but everything is going well.”
Manchester City are only one point above Liverpool in the Premier League table at present. Thus, next Sunday’s meeting at the Etihad Stadium could be crucial in determining who is most likely to win the league.
Guardiola, though, wants to focus on the more imminent challenge from relegation-threatened Burnley.
