UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Three current Penn State women’s soccer players have been called up to the U.S. Under-23 Women’s Youth National Team in redshirt junior Ally Schlegel and juniors Payton Linnehan and Kate Wiesner.
The U.S. roster consists of 22 collegiate players with Schlegel, Linnehan and Wiesner representing three of four players from the Big Ten.
Penn State is tied with Virginia by having three players on the roster and with two each are Duke, Florida State, Stanford and USC.
The U.S. U-23 WYNT will return to the Thorns Preseason Tournament where they will play three NWSL teams over seven days. All the matches will take place at Providence Park, home of Portland Thorns FC.
In January, Wiesner was one of seven current college players who participated in the U-23 WYNT Preseason Training Camp in Austin, Texas. She has previously rostered at the U-15, U-17 and U-19 levels.
Wiesner has served as co-captain of the U-17 National Team, and in 2016 she was a member of the squad that competed in the U-17 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers in Grenada and the U-17 World Cup in Jordan. In 2017, the team won the Torneo Femminile Delle Nazioni Tournament, and in 2018 qualified for the U-17 World Cup in Nicaragua.
Wiesner just completed her junior season at PSU where she played in 19 games for the Nittany Lions, starting in nine.
Schlegel has rostered with the USWNT at the U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-18 levels and was named team captain of the U-18 U.S. WNT.
During the fall 2022 collegiate season, Schlegel earned her third consecutive All-North region and All-Big Ten honors while leading PSU with 10 goals and 4 assists in 21 matches.
Linnehan has played for USA at the U-15 and U-17 levels.
On the U-15 roster, she helped win the 2016 CONCACAF U-15 Championship during which she scored eight goals in the tournament and claimed the Golden Boot award.
She was with the U-17 USWNT that won the 2017 Torneo Femminile Delle Nazioni Tournament in Italy and took part in qualifying for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Nicaragua and competed at the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
Last season, Linnehan played in 11 games with eight starts for the Nittany Lions. She scored seven goals and notched three assists.
