ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Graduate student Umar Farouk Osman and fifth-year senior Marc Ybarra of the University of Michigan men’s soccer team were named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District 5 first team.

Both will move forward onto the national ballot, with the Academic All-America teams to be announced on Dec. 10.

Osman earns the honor for the first time in his career after being a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a 2018 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Osman returned for a fifth year and currently is in the Masters of Sport Management program. The Tamale, Ghana, native has appeared in 16 matches with 12 starts this season, scoring one goal and adding one assist in his final season. Osman ranks second all-time in career appearances (85) and ties for fifth in career starts (75).

Ybarra, who will graduate from the Ross School of Business, earns academic all-district honors for the second time in his career, as he was named to the list in 2020-21 and went on to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-America second-team honoree. Ybarra was a finalist for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He is the only player to appear in and start all 18 matches in the 2021 season, scoring three goals — including the overtime game-winner at Oakland — and adding two assists. Ybarra was named first team All-Big Ten on Nov. 5 and will close out his career as the Michigan all-time leader in games played (91) and games started (90), while ranking second all-time with 24 career assists.

To be eligible, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in his second year at the current…
