ROSEMONT, Ill. – Fifteen Big Ten Conference men’s and women’s soccer student-athletes earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday. Of those students selected, nine are women’s soccer standouts, while the other six are men’s soccer honorees.
On the women’s side, the nine Big Ten’s Academic All-District selections were evenly dispersed among CoSIDA’s eight geographical districts — two from District 2 (Penn State’s Kerry Abello and Sam Coffey), four more from District 5 (Indiana’s Jen Blitchok and Hanna Nemeth, Michigan State’s Lauren Kozal and Samantha White), and three from District 6 (Iowa’s Samantha Cary and Minnesota’s Sophia Boman and McKenna Buisman).
Indiana and Michigan each had two of the Big Ten’s six men’s soccer Academic All-District selections, with the Hoosiers’ Victor Bezerra and Roman Celentano joining the Wolverines’ Umar Farouk Osman and Marc Ybarra in garnering accolades from District 5. The other conference student-athletes chosen for Academic All-America plaudits were Penn State’s Pierre Reedy, who was selected from District 2, and Wisconsin’s Inaki Iribarren, who was honored out of District 6.
The 15 Big Ten soccer standouts who earned Academic All-District citations now are eligible for Academic All-America consideration, with the national honorees selected in early December. Abello was the Academic All-America Women’s Soccer Team Member of the Year last season, the first Big Ten women’s soccer student-athlete to receive that award. She is also a rare three-time Academic All-American, having received first-team honors the past two seasons along with second-team accolades in 2018.
