PSU Defeats Wisconsin 1-0 in B1G Tournament Quarterfinals

MADISON, Wisc. — A goal from Ally Schlegel in the 75th minute proved to the be the difference in the B1G Ten Tournament Quarterfinals as sixth seed Penn State defeated third seed Wisconsin 1-0 on Sunday evening.
 
The Nittany Lions now advance to the tournament semifinals to face second seed Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 3 in Columbus, Ohio at Lower.com Field.
 
With the win, PSU moves to 11-4-3 overall while Wisconsin is now 11-5-3 and eliminated from the tournament.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Penn State came out hot on offense, outshooting the Badgers nine to four in the first half. Seven of the Nittany Lions’ shots came in the first 15 minutes.
 
The attack kept UW’s keeper Erin McKinney busy as she made five saves keeping the match locked 0-0 at halftime.
 
Action was fairly even between both sides until around the 70th minute. The Badgers got a touch past an advancing Katherine Asman. UW took the shot on an open goal, but Maddie Myers hustled to the post sacrificing her body to make the save.
 
In the 75th minute, Penn State would strike on a corner opportunity. Olivia Smith sent the ball in, which deflected off a Badger. Amelia White recovered the ball and got it to Mieke Schiemann who sent it into the box for waiting Ally Schlegel who slotted it home.
 
PSU continued to play strong defense late as Asman made a save in the 84th minute, and Natalie Wilson blocked a shot in the 85th.
