LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women’s soccer team went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. They held the second-ranked Tar Heels scoreless over the games first 60 minutes but ultimately fell 2-0 to the Tar Heels. North Carolina scored two goals in a two minute span starting in the 66th minute to secure the win.
North Carolina had the first shot on goal in the eighth minute. Ally Sentnor made a run in the box towards the end line and fired a shot across her body but Erynn Floyd was in position and made the save. Moments later, Sentnor turned the Cardinals over and got another shot on goal but Floyd was able to make the save again.
In the 21st minute, the Cardinals had their first chance of the half. Maisie Whitsett turned the Tar Heels over and had a run towards the near post. She got a shot off and it went just wide of the net.
Moments later, it was Whitsett again with a chance for the Cardinals. She took a shot from distance and it deflected off the crossbar and came back out into play. The Cardinals could not get to the rebound and the Tar Heels cleared it out of play.
North Carolina had the final opportunity of the first half courtesy of Bella Sember. She took a shot from outside the box and Floyd had to dive to her left to make the save.
At the half, the score was level at 0-0 and the Tar Heels had a slim 5-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half, the Cardinals had back to back dangerous chances in the 52 minute. Patricia Ward had a nice ball up to Addie Chester as she got behind the Carolina defense. The Tar Heel keeper came out to meet Chester and her first shot was saved. Corinne Dente got the rebound and her shot deflected off the left post and out of play.
North Carolina broke through in the 66th minute after their first shot was blocked and the second shot was saved. Ruby Grant pounced on the rebound from the second shot and scored the opening goal.
Just over two minutes later, Carolina added another goal coming off a corner kick to push their lead to 2-0.
