Xavi labels Bayern Munich defeat a 'disgrace'

Xavi has labelled Barcelona 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich last month a “disgrace” ahead of the rematch between the two sides.

Barcelona headed to Munich for their second Champions League match of the season in excellent form having won each of their previous five matches, while the German side were struggling in the Bundesliga.

Despite that though, it was the home team that prevailed on the night, winning 2-0 in a game in which the visitors had more chances than their opponents.

Looking back at it ahead of the rematch between the sides at Camp Nou on a night that could see Barcelona knocked out of this year’s competition if Inter beat Victoria Plzen earlier in the evening, Xavi said the result was a disgrace, feeling his team should have done better and would have if they’d attacked more.

“We have to prove to ourselves that even if we go out, we can be at a good level and we can compete against these opponents, and that Munich [result] was a disgrace because we did more than that,” he said.

“It was an accident because we didn’t attack. We have to show that we are protagonists in the game, take the ball away from them, and win to show that we can compete. Bayern are one of the best teams in the world.

“Regardless of what happens in Milan, we have to win, but we are here because of our own mistakes.”

Dropping down into the Europa League would be a disaster for a club as big as Barcelona, especially given the money they spent in the summer, but if it happens, the manager says his side will take the competition seriously and be motivated.

“If we have to play the Europa League we will compete like lions and see what happens,” he added.
