Aston Villa Confirms Unai Emery Appointment

Aston Villa have confirmed the appointment of former Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal boss Unai Emery as their new manager.

Emery, 50, replaces Steven Gerrard who was sacked last week following Villa’s poor 3-0 loss at Fulham.

The Spaniard will take over on November 1 after his work permit formalities are completed, with caretaker Aaron Danks to remain in charge in the interim having led the side to a 4-0 win over Brentford on Sunday.

Emery departs Villarreal having led the LaLiga club to the 2021 Europa League title with a penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United.

He has more than 900 games managerial experience, mostly in Spain along with spells with Paris Saint-Germain in France and Spartak Moscow in Russia.

Emery has English experience, having spent 18 months at Emirates Stadium with the Gunners, where he took over from legendary long-time boss Arsene Wenger.

Villa are currently 15th in the Premier League, with 12 points from two games, with Sunday’s victory snapping a four-game winless run.

Emery had been approached by Newcastle United about taking over at St James’ Park last season but declined that. Villa go to Newcastle in the league this weekend.

On his departure from Villarreal, Emery wrote on Twitter: “My home, not my club, because I have felt integrated, loved, identified with and passionate for Villarreal.

“I lived first-hand the excellent project driven by the Roig family and our much-missed Jose Manuel Llaneza. From outside it was an admirable project and, from within, I’ve been able to confirm this, feeling part of this.

“We’ve achieved success together, we’ve lived great moments and, regardless of the results, I’ve felt more loved and supported than ever. I’ve enjoyed this journey to the maximum. However, part of every journey is its end.”
