Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz ends transfer speculation as he signs a new long term contract with the club… after Steven Gerrard’s side rebuffed Arsenal in their pursuits to sign the Brazilian on deadline day
Aston Villa have confirmed that they have signed Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz to a new long-term contract.
The 24-year-old had been the subject of heavy interest from Arsenal on deadline day in the last transfer window, with Villa rejecting two bids for the Brazilian international.
Despite interest from the current Premier League leaders, Luiz whose contract expired at the end of the season, has extended his contract at Villa Park.
Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz has signed a new contract to extend his stay at Aston Villa
Luiz is in his fourth season at Villa Park, having joined the club from Manchester City, after the West Midlands-based side were promoted to the Premier League in 2019.
He has gone on to make 120 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and is in a relationship with Alisha Lehmann who plays for Aston Villa Women.
His contract had been due to expire at the end of this season, and with interest from clubs including Arsenal, some had suspected that he might leave the club for nothing next summer.
However, his contract renewal is a huge boost for Steven Gerrard’s side who sit 16th in the standings.
