COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The University of Maryland women’s soccer team will close out their six game homestand with a Thursday night matchup against Illinois. The Terps will then travel to play #4 Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm. Thursday’s matchup will be streamed on B1G+, while Sunday’s matchup will be on the Big Ten Network.

 THIS WEEK’S STORYLINES

series history

  • The Terps have a 3-3-1 overall record with the Illini. Illinois and Maryland met in the 2021 season as the Terps fell by a score of 2-1 in Urbana-Champaign.    
  • Rutgers holds a 7-6-2 all-time record with Maryland. The two teams met in College Park last season as Rutgers came away with a 5-2 win.

Looking back to last week

  • Maryland picked up their first-ever win over Michigan by a score of 1-0 in the Big Ten opener. 
  • Mikayla Dayes scored the game winner for the Terps in the 70th minute. Maddie Smith Logged her first 90 minute B1G shutout in Friday’s victory.

A week of honors

  • Maddie Smith was named to the College Soccer News Women’s National Team this week, the first player in the Nemzer Era. 
  • Tahirah Turnage was named B1G Freshman of the Week after logging 90 minutes on Maryland’s backline in the 1-0 victory over Michigan. She is the first Maryland women’s soccer player to receive this honor since October 2018. 
  • Mikayla Dayes was also named Terp of the week after scoring the game winning goal against Michigan.

New Terps making an impact early

  • Amanda Schafer, Christa Waterman and Tahirah Turnage have all played a significant role in the team’s lockdown defense. Maryland has shut out their opponents in three of their last four matchups. 
  • Sofi Vinas and Juliana Lynch both picked up their second assists’ of the season on Friday night as they connected with Mikayla Dayes who scored the game winner over Michigan.    
  • Six of the eight goals scored so far this season have been scored by Maryland newcomers
