ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Civana Kuhlmann slotted her second penalty kick of the season to help preserve the unbeaten record for the No. 19 Colorado Buffaloes. The goal in the 78th minute held up for the 1-1 draw on the road at Michigan.
Colorado (5-0-2) found itself trailing on the road for the second time this season. The Buffs battled back, just as before at No. 9 BYU, to get the equalizer and a point on the road.
“[Tonight] was a super tough match,” Kuhlmann said after the final whistle. “Michigan is a really good team. We think they’re definitely a top-25 team. Wish we could have gotten the win on the road, but all respect to Michigan. They made it really tough in this environment today.”
Michigan (4-2-1), who dropped out of the top 25 this week, got on the board first and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Wolverines outshot CU 16-15 on the night and forced Dani Hansen to make six saves in her return to the lineup.
“I thought Michigan played really well in the first half,” head coach Danny Sanchez explained. “We weren’t up to speed for the match. Having said that, I thought the second half, especially the first 35 minutes we were really good at creating chances and playing in the final third. I was really pleased with how we played in the second half. It’s tough to get results on the road, and we did that. Now all eyes turn to Sunday.”
UM was able to slow down the Buffs’ high-powered offense. Junior Shyra James fired two shots but was unable to find the net, bringing an end to her 10-game scoring streak.
“I thought when Shyra or I had the ball they did a really good job of getting numbers behind the ball,” Kuhlmann commented. “We couldn’t create as many opportunities today. I had a few missed shots but they did well to slow us down, get behind the ball and move their feet. They blocked shots. I felt every time I was on the ball there were multiple people in front of me. Never a clear 1v1. That makes it tough as a forward.”
How it happened
The first 45 minutes were evenly played outside of the 1-0 Michigan advantage. The Buffs closed the half with a 7-6 lead in shots, but the Wolverines had a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal.
