Antony ‘skips’ training the day after Ajax reject €80m offer from Man Utd

Man Utd target Antony celebrates scoring a goal

Ajax winger Antony has not turned up at training on Friday, the day after Man Utd had a bid turned down for him, according to reports.

The Red Devils are looking to have a big end to the transfer window with only Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez through the door so far.

Casemiro now looks set to join too after Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that he wanted to leave Los Blancos for Old Trafford.

Casemiro moves ‘makes economic sense’ for Manchester United, but is it actually off?

Man Utd made an offer of €80m yesterday for Ajax winger Antony with Erik ten Hag having his eye on the Brazilian for a couple of months.

The Athletic insisted that Man Utd had now ‘revived their interest’ in Antony but, after their bid was rebuffed, the report hinted that a transfer for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo was now ‘more likely’.

It seems like a major coincidence but the Dutch newspaper adds: ‘The reason for the absence – whether it is an injury or whether it has to do with a possible impending transfer – is therefore not known.’

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also had an update today on the situation, he wrote on Twitter: “Manchester United are not giving up on Antony. Ajax turned down new bid but Man Utd plan to try again – they feel Antony really wants the move.

“Been told it’s not sure that Antony starts on Sunday yet, still discussed internally. Gakpo, cheaper option for Man Utd.”

Former Ajax winger Kenneth Perez recently warned Man Utd against going too Dutch this summer with Ten Hag looking at a number of players from the Eredivisie.

Perez told Voetbal International: “They are good quality players. But how far does it go? Does it extend beyond the Eredivisie?

“We saw at Bergwijn that it wasn’t enough for the Premier League. Antony has not yet had a chance in the Premier League, but it is striking how many players are sidetracked abroad.

“Last season Bergwijn was four times in the starting lineup at Tottenham Hotspur and that is not even a top club in England. We have our own separate league. What Erik ten Hag is doing, with many Dutch players,…
