COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Three Maryland men’s soccer student-athletes were named to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region teams, which were announced Tuesday.
Ben Bender (first team), Joshua Bolma (second team) and Brett St. Martin (second team) were selected. It is the first time for all three that they have been selected for a USC All-Region Team. Bender was recently honored by the organization as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Both honors are the latest in a standout season for Bender, who was named the 2021 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. A first-team All-Big Ten selection, Bender led the Terps with seven goals and five assists. The Parkville, Md., native was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year twice and was announced as an invitee to the MLS College Showcase this weekend, although he will not participate in the on-field portion of the event.
Bolma, a fellow college showcase invitee, was named the 2021 Big Ten Freshman of the Year after a tremendous first season that saw him score four goals and add four assists. A first-team All-Big Ten selection, the Accra, Ghana native emerged as one of the most exciting players in all of college soccer.
One of Maryland’s steadiest players during the 2021 campaign, St. Martin’s all-region honors follows him earning first-team All-Big Ten honors. A two-time team captain, the Mount Airy, Md., native helped the Terps give up just 14 goals in 18 matches.
