June 11, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – Detroit City FC News Release
HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN – The Detroit City Football Club (7-4-3) fell on Saturday night at Keyworth Stadium, 2-0, to Sacramento Republic FC (6-4-3). The loss snaps a 15-match home unbeaten streak by Le Rouge dating back to September 18, 2021.
City went into the halftime break for the fifth time this year trailing by a goal. Sacramento struck early in the 10th minute with a tally from distance off the foot of Damià Viader – beat goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher to his far post.
Late in the half, DCFC was able to press the Republic more, including a deep cross from forward Antoine Hoppenot off of a corner. Defender Devon Amoo-Mensah was able to get a head on the cross from Hoppenot but couldn’t beat Sacramento’s keeper, Danny Vitiello.
The second half saw Sacramento take a 2-0 lead in the 56th. Midfielder Keko Gontán was able to make a deep run into the right side of the box. He fought off two defenders and was able to switch to his left foot, beating Steinwascher high for their second goal of the game.
City held the edge in possession (57%) and shots (12, with 4 on target) but turned the ball over twenty-three times which was the difference in the game.
Unable to capitalize on chances, DCFC was held off the scoreboard for just the second time this season. The only other time Detroit was held scoreless was the first game of the year, a 1-0 loss at San Antonio.
Le Rouge will be back in action at home next Saturday June 18 at 12:00 pm against the El Paso Locomotive at Keyworth Stadium on ESPN. This will be the first USL Championship regular season match ever televised on ESPN.
