Game Day: Hounds at Charleston Battery

Hounds Announce 2022 USL Academy League Schedule

June 10, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

The Hounds have traveled to South Carolina, where they will meet their longest-running rival still active in the USL Championship, the Charleston Battery, for the first time this season. Today’s match will mark the 38th time these two teams have squared off against each other and the Hounds hold a 9-13-15 all-time record against the Battery; the Hounds have faced only the Richmond Kickers, Harrisburg City Islanders/Penn FC and Rochester Rhinos more often in their history.

Last week, the Hounds extended tied their second consecutive match when they battled to a 1-1 draw with Detroit City FC at Highmark Stadium. Albert Diwka gave the Hounds a 1-0 lead at the half-hour mark, but Detroit responded in the 70th minute to tie the match. That result extended the Hounds’ run to 15 matches without a loss at home, dating back to last season.

Diwka’s fifth goal of the season contributed to his career-best season, and he looks to add to that during his 100th appearance in the USL Championship against the Battery. Kenardo Forbes also put on an impressive performance against Detroit as he led the team with 90 touches and 52 of 66 passes completed. The Hounds captain remains the all-time assist leader in the USL Championship, as he remains one away from being the first to get 50 assists in the league.

Despite falling to Indy Eleven last week, 4-3, the Battery made a late push in the second half with goals from EJ Johnson and Augustine Williams, and they look to build on that against the Hounds. Johnson’s goal was the first of his professional career, and Williams, a Sierra Leone international, leads the Battery with four goals.

The Battery will be trying to get its first win over the Hounds since 2018 after the Hounds secured two wins and drew with the Battery twice back in 2021. To add to the intrigue around this matchup, there are some familiar faces between the two rosters.

Preston Kilwien of the Battery was a member of the Hounds last season, and today will be the first time he faces his former team. On the flip side, Hounds midfielder Angelo Kelly returns to Charleston, where he played the last four seasons, and Dane Kelly remains the top scorer for the Battery in the “modern” USL era (2011-present) with 42 goals from 2011-15.

The Hounds will battle for their third win on the road this season while they look to snap their three-game winless run (one loss, two draws)….
