2024 NCAA Championship Bracket
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pitt, SMU and Wake Forest advanced through the round of 16 this weekend in the 2024 Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. The Atlantic Coast Conference is the only league to have multiple teams remaining in the field. The quarterfinals will be played Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 and broadcast on ESPN+.
This marks the sixth straight season and the ninth time in the last 10 years in which at least three ACC teams have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
No. 12 seed SMU rallied after conceding an early goal, scoring the final three goals in a resounding 3-1 victory at No. 5 seed Dayton on Saturday, November 30. No. 2 seed Pitt outlasted Kansas City, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday, December 1, to advance to its fourth NCAA Quarterfinal in the last five seasons. No. 8 Wake Forest scored just over a minute into overtime to knock out ACC rival Clemson, the No. 9 seed, 2-1, in an ACC Championship Game rematch.
Kyran Chambron Pinho, Bailey Sparks and Owen Zarnick each scored as SMU (12-2-6) bounced back nicely after giving up a goal just 54 seconds into the game. After picking up the road win in Dayton, Ohio, the Mustangs will return home next weekend and earned a home date with No. 13 seed Marshall, with a berth in the NCAA College Cup on the line. SMU will make its 14th Elite Eight appearance and first since 2019.
Pitt (14-5-0) also conceded an early goal, with Kansas City scoring in the sixth minute, but the Panthers came back with a 15th-minute goal from Casper Grening and a 70th-minute score from Arnau Vilamitjana. The Kangaroos equalized in the 74th minute, which ultimately sent the game to overtime, but Pitt’s Albert Thorsen scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to send the Panthers through to the quarters next weekend, where they will play host to Vermont.
Wake Forest (12-4-7) continued its tremendous run by rallying to top ACC rival Clemson on Dylan Borso’s golden goal in the 92nd minute in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. ACC Freshman of the Year Ransford Gyan scored in the 21st minute to give the Tigers (15-3-4) to early advantage, but Wake Forest countered just before halftime on a goal from Ryan Belal.
