Champions League football returned to Villa Park on Wednesday night as Aston Villa welcomed European giants Bayern Munich to Birmingham and the fans inside the stadium got to witness one of the greatest ever saves in the competition courtesy of Emi Martinez.
Both clubs have started the season in fine form as Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga, while Villa sit fifth in the Premier League having won four out of their opening six matches.
In the Champions League, each team already had one win under their belts and fought hard in Birmingham for a second. The German outfit were the better of the two sides in the opening 45 minutes and Aston Villa were lucky to not go in behind.
Martinez was required to produce a miraculous save from a Michael Olise shot and it will go down as one of the best in the competition’s history.
The Argentine star showed why he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world as he used his fingertips to knock the former Crystal Palace star’s strike over the bar.
It would have been a remarkable goal for Olise to score but unfortunately for the winger, Martinez was between the sticks.
