Three Spartans Honored with Big Ten Weekly Accolades

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men’s soccer had three players honored with Big Ten weekly awards on Tuesday. 

Junior midfielder Jonathan Stout was named Offensive Player of the Week, while redshirt-junior Zac Kelly was named Goalkeeper of the Week. Defender Brandon Munson earned Freshman of the Week honors.

This is Kelly’s third Big Ten weekly award of his career and first Goalkeeper of the Week Award after earning two Defensive Player of the Week accolades last season. This is the first year the conference office has differentiated between defender and goalkeeper awards. The Holt, Michigan, native tied his season high with four saves in MSU’s 1-0 win at No. 15 UCLA on Sept. 27.

Stout captured his first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor by scoring the game-winning goal against UCLA. The junior leads the team in scoring with four goals and one assist for nine points.

Munson is the first Spartan to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. This is the first season that the league has had weekly freshman accolades. Munson played all 90 minutes in the Spartans’ win over the Bruins. He was a key part of the MSU backline that kept UCLA off the scoreboard, despite out-shooting MSU 16-15.

Michigan State’s last Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor was on Sept. 19, 2023 when Kelly earned the honor. The last Offensive Player of the Week honor went to Farai Mutatu on Sept. 21, 2021.

MSU host Northwestern on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
