Freeman Tabbed Co-ACC Defensive Player of the Week

DURHAM, N.C. – After leading the third-ranked Duke women’s soccer team a its seventh-straight victory on Friday, Blue Devil fifth year goalkeeper Leah Freeman has been tabbed the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

A native of Berkeley, Calif., Freeman helped the Blue Devils collect a 3-0 shutout victory over SMU on Friday to move to 2-0 in ACC play.  Freeman played the full 90 minutes in goal, collected four saves and notched her 26th career clean sheet.  Her three shutouts on the year ranks tied for seventh in the ACC.

Freeman has allowed only two goals in eight matches on the year, while leading the ACC and ranking tied for first nationally. The four saves were her second-most this season in a contest, after totaling five against second-ranked North Carolina earlier this season.

The honor for Freeman is her first in the ACC. She earned Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week accolades three different times prior to arriving in Durham.  Freeman shared the ACC honor this week along with California’s Malia McMahon.

The Blue Devils also moved to No. 2 nationally this week in the United Soccer Coaches poll.  The No. 2 ledger equals the highest ranking for Duke by the United Soccer Coaches under the direction of head coach Robbie Church in program history (2022, 2016, 2012, 2011).

Duke turns its attention this week to a pair of ACC matches as the Blue Devils host 25th-ranked Virginia Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., and then Louisville at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6.  Both matches will be aired live on ACC Network Extra.
