Wake’s Colton, UNC’s Armstrong Named ACC Women’s Soccer Players of Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest senior midfielder Emily Colton was selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week and North Carolina freshman defender Trinity Armstrong was chosen the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played September 16-22.

Colton scored in back-to-back matches last week, headlined by the match’s only goal in Thursday’s 1-0 victory over No. 1 Stanford. The Carlsbad, California, native rocketed a shot from just outside the box and found the top-right corner to give the Demon Deacons a lead they would not relinquish, as Wake Forest became the first team ever to post wins over the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in consecutive matches. On Sunday, Colton found the scoresheet again when she capitalized on a penalty kick in a 2-2 draw with visiting California.

Armstrong anchored the North Carolina backline to a pair of clean sheets at Pitt and Syracuse last week. Against the Panthers, the Frisco, Texas, native helped limit the hosts to just five shots on goal, matching their season low. On Sunday, the freshman helped hold the Orange’s attack without a shot in the first half and just four attempts for the match. With Armstrong playing the full 90 minutes in both matches, UNC recorded its third and fourth consecutive shutout on the season.

Conference play continues this week with 11 matches on the slate beginning on Thursday, September 26, and running through Sunday, September 29. ACC Network will broadcast Thursday’s matchup featuring Clemson and Florida State in a rematch of last season’s ACC Championship match, as kickoff from Tallahassee, Florida, is set for 7 p.m. ET.
