Wazzu concludes its nonconference schedule with a trip to No. 7 Utah State, Thursday, Sept. 19, in Logan, Utah. The Cougs and Aggies will kick off at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT from Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field with coverage on MW Network.
Washington State and Utah State are meeting for the third time in program history, with WSU winning the inaugural meeting in 1997 in Pullman and a second meeting in Salt Lake City in 2006. The Cougs posted shutouts in both matches. Thursday’s match marks the first meeting between the Aggies and Cougs in 6,591 days (18 years).
Cougar soccer was named No. 21 on SoccerWire’s list of the Top 50 most successful women’s soccer programs in the country over the last five years.
All-time against nationally-ranked opponents, the WSU program is 45-123-31, a record that falls to 15-72-11 when playing on a top-25 opponent’s field. Utah State marks the second top-10 opponent of the season and second ranked match away from Pullman after a 2-0 defeat at then-No. 2 Stanford, Sept. 1.
Last time on the pitch at Georgia, the Cougars dropped a 1-4 result to the Bulldogs with Coug sophomore Nathalie Lewis netting her first-career goal in the 70th minute. The goal pulled WSU to a 1-2 scoreline before the Cougs’ offensive push was punished by Georgia’s counterattack in the final 10 minutes for a lopsided scoreline.
On the horizon, the Cougars will begin their West Coast Conference slate, Saturday, Sept. 28, hosting San Diego as an affiliate member of the WCC.
Grayson Lynch played her 86th career match Sunday against Georgia, moving her into a 4th-place tie in school history for career appearances. If Lynch plays all remaining regular season matches, she will finish second in all-time WSU matches played with 97 behind Sydney Pulver (98).
In last Thursday’s shutout win against Georgia Southern, Nadia Cooper earned her 16th career shutout and picked up her 29th career win. Cooper moved into a tie with Lindsey Jorgensen for fourth in WSU career GK wins.
