Cougs Close Weekend with Draw to UC San Diego

Georgia Southern

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State Cougar soccer team (2-2-2) tied the UC San Diego Tritons, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman. WSU’s Rajanah Reed equalized for the Cougars in the 37th minute after UCSD took an early lead in the 21st minute, netting her first goal of the season in the Cougars’ draw.

The Cougars controlled the midfield throughout the match, playing line-breaking passes through the center of the pitch and changing the point of attack throughout the match. The Tritons scored the opening goal against the run of play when Reese Tappan lost her footing at the top of the Wazzu box, being dispossessed by Raquel Kalpakoff, who calming finished the one-vs-one finish against Nadia Cooper.

With UCSD leading in the 22nd minute, the Cougs continued to press into the attacking third, finishing the half with 10 shots to San Diego’s three. Reed scored the equalizing goal in the 37th minute on a perfectly-timed run at the top of the box. Senior Grayson Lynch played a through ball from midfield to sophomore Naomi Clark. With her back to goal, Clark glanced Reed over her right shoulder and played a well-weighted ball into the penalty area as Reed ran on and finished to the bottom left corner.

The Cougar goal marked Reed’s first goal of the season and fourth career goal. Clark earned her first-career assist for the pass, while Lynch tallied her ninth all-time assist and first of the season.
