No. 20 Duke Draws San Diego in Season Opener Thursday

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – No. 20 Duke men’s soccer played to a 2-2 draw in Thursday’s season opener in San Diego, California. The Blue Devils used two second-half goals to get back into the match, after trailing 1-0 at the half.
 
Junior Jose Ortega recorded his first career goal just after halftime, receiving a pass from Ulfur Bjornsson to level the score in the 48th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Bjornsson added a goal of his own, giving Duke its first lead of 2024, 2-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Duke and San Diego opened the match feeling each other out for the first six minutes of play before the Toreros produced the first chance of the contest.
  • San Diego scored in the 26th minute, as Oliver Rhoades finished into the top right corner of the goal with his left foot from just outside the box, 1-0.
  • To begin the second half, Ulfur Bjornsson created a chance in the 48th minute, finding Jose Ortega for the equalizer, 1-1. 
  • Bjornsson followed up his impressive buildup in the 55th minute, walking in from 30 yards out and hitting a shot into the top right corner of the goal to give Duke its first lead of the evening, 2-1. Felix Barajas assisted Bjornsson’s first goal of the season. 
  • In the 70th minute, the Toreros were awarded a penalty kick as Simon Duus Muller tied the match, 2-2.
