Badgers claw past Huskies for first win of the season

STORRS, Conn. – The Wisconsin women’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2024 season after defeating UConn 2-1 on Thursday night.

How it happened

First Half

Wisconsin was granted the kickoff and the game was underway.

In the 11th minute, Aryssa Mahrt sent a ball to the center of the net for the Badgers’ first look at the goal. She retaliated with another in minute 14.

UW kept possession and dominated the midfield for the majority of the half taking the advantage in shots (3-2) and shots-on-goal (2-1).

Second Half

The second half began with the scoreboard still reading 0-0.

Mahrt tried again in the 50th minute, but once again could not get it past UConn’s keeper, Kaitlyn Mahoney.

Mahrt finally scored the Badgers’ first goal of the season in the 59th minute of the game, giving the team the 1-0 lead. The assists were credited to Hailey Baumann and Ashley Martinez.

With an elegant pass coming from Adee Boer, Mahrt was able to capitalize on the second goal of the night in minute 73.

The Huskies were able to find the back of the net in the 83rd minute to trail by one.

With 93 seconds left on the clock, Brooke Nelson entered the game in net for the first time in her career.
